Launching I CAN’s Chatterbox 2017

We are delighted to announce the official launch of Chatterbox 2017 – our annual early years event for children aged 0 – 5, which will kick off during the week of May 8th 2017.

Chatterbox 2017 aims to raise awareness around the importance of good speech, language and communication for all children and we are calling on all early years settings to get involved. As there is no fundraising element this year, anyone and everyone can take part!

Now in its 16th year, our Chatterbox event encourages practitioners in nurseries and early years settings to support and develop children’s communication skills. We will provide nurseries and early years settings with a week’s worth of fun and engaging activities. The Chatterbox activities have been developed by I CAN’s very own speech and language experts and focus on the core areas of children’s early language including listening and attention, understanding what is said, learning and using new words, building sentences and talking socially.

Chatterbox is once again supported by TTS, suppliers of high quality educational resources and all settings taking part will be in with the chance of winning vouchers to spend on supplies. I CAN simply ask settings to send us a photo of their chatterbox activity to be entered into the competition.

Kate Freeman, Lead Communication Advisor for I CAN, said: “Chatterbox is a fantastic opportunity to get children chatting and give them the best possible start in life. Early language skills are crucial to later development. Without these skills, children will struggle to learn, make friends and reach their full potential. We know that 1 in 10 children in the UK – that’s two or three in every classroom and more than one million across the country – are struggling because of difficulties with their speech and language, which is why raising awareness about early speech and language development during Chatterbox week is so vital”.

If your nursery or early years setting is interested in taking part in Chatterbox 2017 please keep an eye on www.ican.org.uk/chatterbox-challenge for updates and where the Chatterbox activities will soon be available. For other queries please email us at chatterbox@ican.org.uk.
