Learning to read with Jake and Tizzy!

Here at I CAN we know that early language skills are indicators of a child’s later academic success and are key to their ability to learn to read – that’s why we developed the Jake & Tizzy series!

This series of eight books produced by I CAN, the children’s communication charity, is based on everyday familiar situations that children find easy to relate to. The Jake & Tizzy stories are a fun way for parents, carers and childminders to support language development at pre-school age, helping children to develop the skills they need to start primary school. In each book you will also find ‘Tizzy’s Talking Tips’, some hints from Tizzy the Tiger to keep in mind while reading with your child.

There are lots of simple things that you can do to help children learn to read, such as talking about things you see in the book, the characters, where they went and what they did. You can help grow your child’s vocabulary by talking about what different words mean and telling your child the name for anything they don’t know. You can find more reading tips on our Speech, Language, Communication and Literacy factsheet here.

I CAN’s beautifully illustrated Jake & Tizzy books are a wonderful gift for anyone supporting pre-school children with their reading and language development this Christmas. They are available to buy individually or as a boxset from I CAN’s online shop here.
