“What being an I CAN Licensee means to me”

We spoke to one of I CAN’s fantastic Licensees, Anne-Marie Cray, about her experience working with I CAN and what being a Licensee means to her.

As an Associate Speech and Language Therapist with ChildSpeech, an independent speech and language therapy service, I first heard about I CAN’s programmes through our founder, Dr Yvonne Wren. I was familiar with some of I CAN’s resources already, having used them many times whilst working as a speech and language therapist for the NHS.

I became an I CAN Licensee in 2014 when I trained to deliver Talk Boost. In April 2015 I received training to deliver Primary Talk and to become a Primary Talk Mentor. I found the training very clear and the post-course access to the Licensee website has been invaluable.

Part of the motivation to become a Licensee with I CAN was the fact the the programmes are piloted and evidenced based; something which is very important to us at Child Speech and across the schools network. The training packages themselves are so well organised and easy to deliver. School staff love the resources and find the materials very easy to navigate; I CAN have thought of everything – it’s very clear what you need to deliver every session.

The cost of the Talk Boost programme is good and there is always a great deal of interest from schools; the challenges lie in actually organising trainings days to suit everyone and with schools releasing staff for the day.

Together with other ChildSpeech associates, I have provided training for five schools so far and we have had some excellent feedback; one school said “the staff training was excellent and staff were enthusiastic and extremely positive about the impact of Talk Boost…This has carried on in to the assessments… and I’ve received some excellent feedback about the quality of the assessment and how it has helped inform their knowledge of their children – and how revealing it has been.”

One of my personal highlights from delivering I CAN training was when a practitioner told me it was “the best speech and language training they had ever received!”

I know the training has a really positive impact in helping school staff understand ways to support all children in class. The progression tools are really useful in helping staff understand the range of speech, language and communication needs in school and for giving them a way to assess and then re-assess.

I would definitely recommend becoming a Licensee to my colleagues; the support from I CAN is good and I have found the Licensee newsletter and information on the Facebook group page very useful for updates on research and discounts on I CAN products.  The Talk Boost programme in particular is incredibly well prepared and laid out which makes it so simple to deliver. Staff love the resources and find the training positive and informative; they are always so excited to go off and deliver the intervention themselves.  It is really uplifting to see that the teachers understand the programme’s value across the school day; beyond simply the intervention and they can’t rate it highly enough.
