Chatterbox Challenge Week : Guest Blog from La Jolie Ronde
It’s Chatterbox Challenge week and our fantastic partner groups are sharing blogs and activities with us throughout the week! Our third blog is from La Jolie Ronde, a unique centre for French and Spanish language learning, who have kindly provided Chatterbox Challenge with some exclusive Spanish songs . Read their blog below on developing language at a young age.
Spain and France are two of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. So when we arrive there, why is it so many of us can’t speak the language? How many times have you heard people say “I wish I’d learnt another language when I was younger”?
Founder of La Jolie Ronde, Colette says, “As my children were growing up they were very reluctant to speak French as it made them feel ‘different’ to other children. So I devised some fun activities, stories and songs in French for my children, and their friends joined in. Over time I continued to develop my methodology and word got around that learning French was fun. Many parents wanted their children to learn French too; so began La Jolie Ronde.”
Over the years, La Jolie Ronde have seen scientific research that shows the younger the learner the better. Babies and toddlers have a greater capacity for tuning into foreign language sounds than at any other time in their lives and children learn accents and language patterns far more easily at this age, whereas older children struggle with what becomes natural for younger students.
Children love to repeat sounds, and when rewarded by attention from an adult, it stimulates them to repeat and continue with increased vocalisation. The same principles apply when a child learns a second language – it becomes enjoyable and in turn a more likely positive experience when they are older.
We at La Jolie Ronde Languages for Children have been practicing this ethos for over 30 years not only teaching a second language but introducing children to the everyday realities of the country and the culture they are studying. Our methodology is based on oral repetition through fun action songs, games, role play and other activities.
Colette Hallam, says: “Parents and carers can play a very important part developing a second language just simply by actively praising and encouraging your child to join in and have fun. The more a parent gets involved and shares their enthusiasm, the quicker your child will settle and respond. At home don’t forget to play and sing with your baby/toddler whenever you can why not recite one of the rhymes or songs whilst changing a nappy or at bath time. Particularly with our ‘Baby, Toddler and Parent classes’ we offer a unique opportunity to introduce the sounds, patterns and rhythm of the chosen language.”
La Jolie Ronde are delighted to be partnering with I CAN and supporting their Chatterbox Challenge, as a fellow organisation who prioritises children’s communication in the early years and beyond. We believe that the Chatterbox Challenge is a fantastic platform for children to have fun whilst developing their own communication skills as well as a great way to raise funds for children who struggle to communicate.
La Jolie Ronde have supplied I CAN’s Chatterbox Challenge with an exclusive Spanish action song to add a fun new twist.
