New books available on I CAN’s shop: Talk to Me review
Talk to Me is written by a parent of a child with Asperger Syndrome and this book provides practical strategies for developing communication skills based on her family’s real-life experiences. As a mother struggling to engage her son in conversation the author describes an interesting approach she developed for tackling conversation skills.
The first part of the book looks at how to work on conversation by taking the reader through a range of different aspects of conversation skills and describing how the author approached each area. The chapters include practical tips and strategies for supporting that particular conversational skill.
The book also looks at how to develop social skills, life skills and independence, taking the reader through a number of scenarios likely to be encountered by young adults and their families such as dealing with money, preparing for work and learning to drive. The author provides practical hints and tips on how to address these.
This is a very readable and practical resource for both practitioners and families and would be useful to support children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and speech and language impairment.
