1980s I CAN song revived in 2014!

David Snell, singer/songwriter has shared with I CAN a song written for a fundraising video in 1989. The song, ‘I can’ was written after a brainstorming session where the team thought of phrases that would convey the meaning of language difficulties they were trying to demonstrate. The music was originally written for keyboards and transferred later to acoustic guitar.

David said, “Back in the early to mid 90’s my writing partner and I were involved in creating a song to be used with a fundraising video that was to be shot for I CAN about the charity’s work. We have used the song extensively at live gigs and more recently on James Tighe’s show on Croydon Radio. It is and remains one of our favourite compositions.” NTN 2014

I CAN

Child of fortune, you can sing the song of youth

Accusations, you can speak the words of truth

But life’s not easy when you can’t be understood

In conversation, but in time I know I could

If you would help me find the key that unlocks my world

Don’t say that it’s impossible for me to find the words

Because I can, given help and understanding

I can, given someone who will listen

I can, I can lift the dark clouds from my life

I can, if I can just make you realise that all it takes

Is time and love, then I can

When I talk to you do you understand what you hear?

When you listen to me do the words I say sound clear?

You take for granted all the words you want to say

But we’re not all perfect; we’re not all made the same way

If you would help me find the key that unlocks my world

Don’t say that it’s impossible for me to find the words

Because I can, given help and understanding

I can, given someone who will listen

I can, I can lift the dark clouds from my life

I can, if I can just make you realise that all it takes

Is time and love, then I can
