Three cheers to three I CAN champs who challenged themselves last weekend!
May Bank Holiday was both exciting and tough for several I CAN staff members who have taken on some amazing challenges for I CAN, and raised over £1,250 so far! We are all really proud of their achievements, and grateful to the 55 runners that joined I CAN at the Bupa 10K on Sunday, plus Louise Whaite who ran the Edinburgh Marathon for I CAN!
Hear from our three champs about what they got up to this May Bank Holiday:
This weekend our Head of Business Development, Michelle Martinez, ran the Bupa London 10K for the fifth consecutive year. She says….. ‘Quite unbelievably I achieved a personal best time. 65 minutes and 52 seconds- 16 seconds faster than four years ago and a massive 7 minutes faster than last year. I did want to beat 65 minutes and felt incredibly good all the way round. It was a beautiful day, the sun shone and the crowd was fantastic. London looked amazing and I’ve never felt so race fit, unlike poor Mo Farah who had to pull out and wave at me from the starting line. So I just think in all the excitement I forgot to focus on the clock. So now I am a bit ‘if only’, but then it wouldn’t have been so much fun. Still, there’s always next year……. ‘

Corporate, Community and Events Fundraiser, Krista Dixon ran her first Edinburgh Marathon. She shares her experience…. ‘As a charity events fundraiser I am always supporting runners in their challenges whether it be a 10K, half marathon or a full marathon. Having run the Bupa London 10K and the Great North Run I wanted to step up the mileage and learn first hand what our I CAN marathon runners go through when they sign up for the London and Brighton Marathon! I have been training since December and have experienced the highs (being able to eat whatever I want and not worry about gaining weight) and lows (training through the winter and giving up alcohol). However, making it to the finish, the great crowd support and the beautiful weather on the day (a shocker for Scotland!) made it an unforgettable experience. I have been limping around the office and stairs are still a struggle. However it was all worth it and knowing that the money I am raising will be going to help I CAN makes it even more special!’

Rose Grissell, Major Donor and Special Events Manager, cycled 180 miles from Heathfield, East Sussex to Paris in 24 hours! Rose braves London roads for her 6 mile commute to the I CAN office everyday but had never really ventured much further than this until deciding to take up this challenge. She says, ‘I didn’t have any plans on the May bank holiday weekend and so it seemed a good idea 3 weeks ago! I was slightly regretting this decision when my legs and brain both turned to jelly with 40 miles still to go. This was also the point that I was convinced I had developed huge blisters on my bum! Luckily I actually didn’t have any blisters but it sure felt like I did! After a re-fuel and a large handful of jelly babies in my pocket, I was able to peddle all the way to the Eiffel Tower. It was an incredible challenge and a ‘trés jolie’ cycle but knowing that I was raising money for I CAN made me push it all the way. I’d love to raise over £500 so any more sponsorship would be very much appreciated!

Join us in our next challenge…Spartan Race!
The fun does not stop there. Rose and Krista along with a team of friends are taking on Spartan Race on the 30th August 2014. This a 5K extreme obstacle course through mud, water and fire. So far they have recruited 10 potential Spartans and they are still recruiting. If you are interested in taking on the challenge with them then click here for more information. It is only £35 to enter and we ask that you raise as much as you can for I CAN!
