Shine a Light Awards Finalists announced!

Here at I CAN, we were thrilled when we found out that several of our colleagues and partners have been shortlisted as part of the Shine A Light awards 2013-14, celebrating excellent practice in supporting children and young people’s communication development. This yearly event, sponsored by The Communication Trust and Pearson Assessment, is a great way to showcase all the hard work taking place in the field of speech, language and communication.

We were very proud that one of our Dawn House School students, Aiden Baker, is a finalist in the Young Person of the Year award – a fantastic achievement. Aiden, a student at Dawn House from a very young age, has worked hard as part of a team delivering training to others about the impact of speech, language and communication needs and it’s great that his resilient nature and work raising awareness of the issue has been recognised.

We’d also like to say a huge ‘well done’ to the Kirkby Collaborative of Schools who have been shortlisted for the Commissioning Award.  They have successfully carried on with the A Chance to Talk model of commissioning speech and language therapy services and their innovative approach to delivering services has been acknowledged.

Well done to our partners in North Lancashire who have been recognised for their successful Workforce Development – who are our partners rolling out the Early Language Development Programme (ELDP). It’s great that the ELDP has been central to the work that they are doing.

And lastly we had the excellent news that Shane Dangar, a young man with Asperger’s Syndrome involved in the Raising Your Game Project, has been shortlisted as a Communication Champion. Shane regularly volunteers in his free time to deliver Talk About Talk training, spreading the word about communication difficulties to a wide range of different audiences and is a great ambassador for those with speech, language and communication needs.

We wish all of the finalists the best of luck and look forward to hearing the results at the awards ceremony on 3 April 2014.
