Pre-schoolers’ communication gets a boost with new activity pack

Children’s communication charity, I CAN launches new resource Chatting with Children at Childcare Expo, Coventry

Pre-school children in the UK will get a boost from a new activity pack designed to help develop their communication skills – launched at the Childcare Expo in Coventry last week (28th September).  The new resource, Chatting with Children, was produced by I CAN, the children’s communication charity, for parents and practitioners, to help children aged 3 to 5 years develop their speaking, listening and understanding. This new resource is part of the Early Talkers box set which includes the popular Babbling Babies and Toddler Talk to develop children’s communication from birth to five years.

Over 1500 people registered to visit the Expo over the two days and many attended the launch of Chatting with Children on Friday afternoon and listened to talks from I CAN representatives including its Warwickshire based author, Kate Freeman, I CAN speech and language therapist and communication advisor. Over the two day Expo, early years practitioners were also able to attend workshops on children’s communication hosted by I CAN experts. Early Talkers resources are part of I CAN’s communication and language programme Early Talk 0-5 years for practitioners working in partnership with parents.

Communication underpins everything that we do. And while we may take our ability to communicate for granted, all children need help to understand what is said and learn how to talk and interact with others. Parents are a child’s first teacher and are central to developing communication skills from birth onwards. Practitioners have a vital role to play in encouraging parents to nurture good speech, language and communication skills. The Early Talkers activity packs will help both parents and early years practitioners to give children the best start before they start school and throughout their lives.
